To conduct seismic design of structures rationally, it is necessary to accurately understand the properties of the ground directly beneath the foundation and the surrounding soil. The "hollow torsional shear test" applies torque to the upper end of a hollow cylindrical specimen, twisting it in the circumferential direction to induce shear deformation throughout the specimen.
